I've known Kendy Pearson since I was fourteen when I started taking piano lessons from her. (By the way, she's an amazing pianist, along with being an author) I have been a Beta Reader for several of her books.

What are your published works? (books, articles, etc.)

Before I wrote novels, I had hundreds of my articles published in periodicals. I also wrote children’s Sunday School curriculum for a publisher for a couple of years. Novels I’ve published include the three-book series, “West Virginia: Born of Rebellion’s Storm” (When the Mountains Wept (2024), When Heaven Thunders (2024), and In Tempest Winds (2025)). My latest release is Fires of Injustice (4/2026).

Have you won any awards? Which ones? I’ve won eight literary awards to date, all of them for pre-published manuscripts. Two Genesis Awards, One Crown Award, and five Cascade Awards.

When did you start seriously writing? I began writing professionally after retiring from decades of teaching high school in 2013, and I sold my first few articles in 2014.

How long have you been an author? In this profession, you technically aren’t considered an author until you’ve published a book, so by that definition, I’ve only been an author for two years. I wrote my first book clear back in 2013 though.

What is your favorite genre to write? I love writing children’s books with lots of rhyming and alliteration, and second to that, I enjoy writing historical fiction. All that research is so much fun! And stepping back in time is a fabulous way to escape into an imaginary existence.

What is your favorite part of writing? The research! Oh, and after the book is finished and you are holding a finished book in your hands.

What’s the hardest part of writing? The editing is the absolute most grueling part of the writing process. There are so many rules to follow, and I tend to second-guess my word choices on every page.

What advice to you have for other writers? Every type of writing has its own wheelhouse of expectations and guidelines—whether it is novels, newspapers, picture books, or magazines. Learn, learn, learn, and then set your goal. Learn some more, dive in, and join a critique group. Don’t ever stop learning!

What do you like to do besides writing? I like long walks in the country and making music. Music is my soul’s language of expression, much more so than words. I guess it is just how I’m wired.

What is your favorite book? Hands-down, the greatest Book of all time: the Bible. It is necessary food for my soul, every single day. I don’t have a favorite fiction book because there are just so many great ones.

What is your favorite Bible verse? I LOVE so, so many. On my mind the most lately is John 15:16: Jesus is talking to his disciples, and he tells them, “I chose you to bear fruit…abundantly…fruit that will last.” That is my life’s verse and why I write and publish and serve in whatever way Jesus asks me to serve.

Even though I love editing (the big picture/structure stuff) is my favorite, I can relate to second-guessing every word. I also love research! Having more than one art form (like piano) is also helpful as a writer. I've found that my other interests and hobbies always inspire me and help me with my writing.

I also highly recommend all of Kendy's books. They will draw you in and feed your heart. Kendy's meticulously researched novels will do more than spark your interest in the unknown parts of American history, they will also give you a depth of understanding of human nature and our need for our gracious Lord. Just be sure to set time aside to read-- you won't want to put her books down! Her characters are so real that you feel as if you know them.
