Fires of Injustice by Kendy Pearson

Review

Summary: Yakira Mitchell and her family are determined to save the souls - and lives - of the Chinese immigrants around them, even if it costs them everything.

Notes: Before reading this book, I had a vague idea of this time period on the west coast. After reading any of Kendy Pearson’s books, I always want to do some more research into the history surrounding the story. Honestly, I like the “West Virginia: Born of Rebellion’s Storm” series better, but that might just be because I know the characters better having read three books about them. SPOILER!!! One guy really likes his cousin...which is weird. But she’s not his cousin, so it’s fine...but they think they’re cousins.

P.S. I was an ARC reader, so this book will not be actually published until mid-April.

Age of main character: twenty-ish

Violence: Quite a bit. There are angry mobs, corrupt politicians, and immoral villains. There are break-ins, arson, gunshots, abandonment, and murders. Not to mention the various other occurrences in a region absolutely determined to drive out a group of people by any means necessary. And emotional conflict and unforgiveness.

Romance: Yes, certainly. Two characters REALLY want to like each other, but one of them is angry with the other...and she thinks about him.

Scary themes: Lots. Murder because of prejudice, for one. Also, a big part of the story is the home for girls who run away from brothels, of which there are quite a few. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone under fifteen.

Genre: Historical Fiction
