You don't usually expect authors to be selling books at a craft fair, but that is where I met Heidi Breton. Her book had a hedgehog on the cover, so of course I picked it up!
What are your published works? (books, articles, etc.)
Mugwort's Shadow (2025) and Journey to Claw Cave (2025). I'm currently editing the third book in the series, to be released this year!
Have you won any awards? Which ones?
Nope, no awards so far.
When did you start seriously writing?
In my 20s. Originally, I only ever wanted to read. Then I realized that some of the books I wanted to read hadn't been written yet! So I decided to start writing more of what I would want to read. Then, as a parent, I decided to write some books I'd like my children to read.
How long have you been an author?
About 20 years. I have worked on my writing skills since my early 20s and written a few unpublished works over the years, both novels and short stories.
What is your favorite genre to write?
Speculative fiction, mainly fantasy and science fiction.
What is your favorite part of writing?
I really enjoy editing - it feels like putting a puzzle together when I take a draft and rework it to so that all the pieces come together in the best possible way.
What the hardest part of writing?
The first draft!
What advice to you have for other writers?
Never stop learning. Find people who will give you honest, critical feedback, toughen your skin until you can take it, and then apply it to your work and keep improving, day by day.
What do you like to do besides writing?
I love to read, and I read at every opportunity. I also enjoy puzzles and games and the occasional kitchen adventure.
What is your favorite book?
The Count of Monte Cristo.
What is your favorite Bible verse?
"Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9, ESV
Do you have a website or blog that we could check out?
I don't blog, but I do have a website: http://heidibretonbooks.com. I've got a few pages there about my priorities in writing children's fiction. I do post on Instagram, as well. My username is: @heidibretonbooks
Thank you for coming! Readers, come back next week for another interview!

What a lovely interview! I also love the editing part, definitely my favorite. Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite books. It's the first classic I ever read. I also have been writing for as long as Heidi and am inspired by my kids.
One interesting thing: Heidi Breton's favorite part of writing is the editing, and Kendy Pearson finds that the hardest part. Isn't great that we all like different things?
