Stardust and Silence by Ashley Willingham

Review

Summary: What do you get when you combine Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, and The Little Mermaid? This book!

Notes: I can almost guarantee you will have the soundtracks for those movies playing in your head as you read. Ashley Willingham does an amazing job (as usual) with her world building. Everything is meticulously set up: Species, technology, "geography." This is a stand-alone story, but if you enjoy it, you should check out her other fairytales: “Dreams and Dragon Wings” and “Smoke and Glass Slippers.” I am reviewing this one because it is my favorite. In this book, the chapters switch between the two main characters, so you get to hear what is going on in their heads. That is a good thing, since one of the characters can’t talk. (Hence the title) It is a tad mushy at times, but what do you expect? Also, if you watched Treasure Planet...remember the cat alien? Yeah, there’s some of those in here.

Age of main character: Old enough to captain a ship and to get married.

Violence: Battles/skirmishes. Almost everyone carries (and uses) blasters or another sort of weapon. There’s a hive of scum and villainy. Epic chase scene!

Romance: Most certainly (still clean, like every other book I will review). Like I said before, mushy at times...more than “When the Mountains Wept”

Scary themes: There’s a Witch-king. And scheming politicians. And the death of a loved one. And a couple characters turn to the Dark Side.

Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Steampunk
