A Tale of Two Castles

Brother Approval: Probably not

Author: Gail Carson Levine

Age of MC: twelve, but feels older

Notes: Not to be confused by Dickes work of a similar title, this book is loosely based off of "Puss and Boots," just with a detective dragon. Something that is a little weird is that the dragon doesn't specify whether it is a boy or a girl dragon. It's not meant to be um...like what that means today. The dragon prefers to be mysterious, and that is all. I came to the conclusion that the dragon is a girl.

Cranford

Brother Approval: probably no

Ella Enchanted

Brother Approval: No

Author: Gail Carson Levine

Age of MC: fifteen...but feels older by the end.

Notes: This book is hardly like the movie. There are no giants who sing and dance, or political protests, of a fan club for Prince Charmont. Also, Ella is a bit younger...and the story is less funny...but I like it a lot.

Enclave

Brother Approval: Yes for some, no for others.

Author: lots

Age of MC: fifteen and older

Notes: This is a publishing house. Enclave publishes books for older teens and young adults. I have liked everything that I have read. Their books are often heavier and darker, and not for younger readers. I have reviewed several of their books.

Grace Livingston Hill

Brother Approval: no to most, pending on a few

Author: Grace Livingston Hill

Age of MC: grown up. Usually the MC is a girl.

Notes: I didn't write down all of Mrs. Hill's books, because she wrote a lot, but I have liked every one that I have read. If any Christian movie studios want to make a Halmark-type movie, they should pick up some of these books! I've read a lot of them, and they are all sweet and wonderful. Ignore many of the book covers they aren't...accurate.

Jane Eyre

Brother Approval: no

Author: Charlotte Bronte

Age of MC: child at beginning, married at the end.

Notes: If your daughter wants to read gothic fiction, and you don't want to do vampires, this book is an option. It is my opinion that the Bronte sisters did NOT have a traumatic childhood, they just liked to write books that would shock everybody. SPOILERS!!! The house is not haunted, it's just Mr. Rotchester's crazy wife, Mr. Rochester almost marries Jane while he is married to his original wife, his wife also is violent and occasionally traverses the house, terrifying Jane.

Little House in the Big Woods

Brother Approval: yes

Author: Laura Ingles Wilder

Age of MC: five in the beginning of the sereis, married at the end.

As for potential concerns, Laura admits that she finds church boring.
