Realistic Modern Fiction Mini Reviews
Adventures with Waffles

Author: Maria Parr
Age of MC: nine
Notes: Funny, full of adventure, and reminiscent of Pippi Longstocking. What else could you want? Written from a Christian Worldview would be nice. The kids lie and it is evident that the author isn't a Christian. Still, it's a fun book.

Astrid the Unstoppable

Author: Maria Parr
Age of MC: nine
Notes: Same things as "Adventures With Waffles" except that Astrid's mom is away saving the whales, not raising her daughter! Adtrid's dad is doing a good job, but Astrid misses her mom. Also, a central part of the story is that one of the characters fathered a child out of wedlock. Great story...but I wish those two things weren't in there.

Enclave

Author: lots
Age of MC: fifteen and older
Notes: This is a publishing house. Enclave publishes books for older teens and young adults. I have liked everything that I have read. Their books are often heavier and darker, and not for younger readers. I have reviewed several of their books.
Brother Approval: Yes for some, no for others.
Subgenre: Anything fiction
Additional Genre: almost anything Fiction
The Mysterious Benedict Society

Author: Trenton Lee Stewart
Age of MC: twelve
Notes: Rather intense and thought provoking. The villain is controlling everyone using sound waves...well, a signal riding the sound waves. And then there's the issue of brainwiping...and the Ten Men who have ten ways to kill you.
Brother Approval: Yes
Subgenre: School
Additional Genre: Science Fiction/Mystery/Older Children's
