Summary: Legend says that the Phoenix is a fiery bird with power over death...but is the bird ruling the forest truly the Phoenix?

Notes: I don't read a lot of graphic novels, but this was recommended to me, so I read it. I was impressed by both Graeme J. Friesen's plot and illustrations. I love how much expression the little birds have! It would be a great book for a reluctant reader, with the great illustrations, engaging plot, and expressive characters.

Age of main characters: Grown-up birds

Violence: The Sparrows must have one of their wings clipped in order to be protected by the ruler of the forest. There are prisoners who have to cut stone with their beaks. One character gets beaten up. One character dies. (It's an allegory...so guess what happens to him?)

Romance: One girl bird flirts once.

Scary themes: Just the aforesaid violence.

Genre: Allegory/Children/Graphic Novel
