The Dark Star

The Dark Star, Callenlas Chronicles #1, by H. R. Hess

Summary: Finishing school? No way! Princess Runa would rather face an angry dragon. Spy for Lord Lur? Sure! Zaphreth is willing to do anything for the tSardian general.

Notes: I certainly like the story, the characters, and the land of Callenlas. It isn't a direct allegory (Otherwise I would have labeled it as such) It's kinda like Narnia, especially with the stars. Do you recall, how in Narnia, the stars are like people? Well, in this book, they are too. However, they play a much more active role, especially King Elior. He's the chief star. He's sort of like a Jesus-figure. Not entirely, of course, since this isn't an allegory. (I emailed the author, H. R. Hess, and asked) Oh, another thing I like: there's the Mind Gift. sort of like being telepathic and telekinetic.

Age of main character: fourteen

Violence: Battles, kidnaping, dragons. Not super descriptive.

Romance: Yes. Very mild.

Scary themes: Kidnaping, creepy villain, slave traders, traitors.

Genre: High Fantasy
