Recorder

Recorder, The Children of the Consortium #1, by Cathy McCrumb

Summary: The Recorders watch. We must not interfere with events, must stay neutral. Failure is not an option, nor are personal opinions. I have broken the rules.

Notes: (that's from the point of view of the main character, as is the whole book.) This is now one of my favorite sci-fi books! I like the humor, the thought processes, and the fact that my silly in-head comentary was actually right! I was reading along, came to a sentence, grinned at the vague similarity to a certain show, read on, and that similarity was on purpose! (Don't let anyone near the controls.) The characters are endearing...that is, the ones who are supposed to be are. I don't like when the main girl falls for a jerk, and thankfully, that does not happen in this book! Nathaniel Timmons is kind and thoughtful and capable. With a temper. But not a jerk. Cathy McCrumb is an exelent writer! Her choice of words, the way she describes things, the voice she uses for Recorder's narating, it's all amazing! Her word choice is great, just like Jane Austen, Charled Dickens, and Angella Bell. I also love how much importance the main characters, especially Recorder, place on human life.

As for content advisory, there is a lot of in-world swearing. (Void take you, spacing fool, and so on.) Marriages are called "Contracts" and they can be non-exclusive. Also, there is mentions of children being concieved outside of Contract. Unwanted children (some of which we would consider Special Needs) are gifted to the Consortium, where they are trained as servants, doctors, or Recorders. Abortion is illegal...so that is the option. The "week" is non-existent, which bothered me. Instead, there are ten-days. During the French Revolution, the Republic tried that. It failed terribly. There is a thing called "Primary Reclamation," which SPOLIER!!! is basically forced organ donation.

Age of Main Character: twenty-something.

Violence: Yes. There is a virus that kills by breaking down blood vessel walls. General Science Fiction fights with blasters. Punching, electrocution, kidnapping, and so forth. Explosions.

Romance: Yes, but not super mushy. One guy manipulates a woman's emotions, and another SPOLER!!! kisses Recorder but doesn't want to. Neither does she.

Scary Themes: Primary Reclamation, Imprisonment, the virus, the whole Consortium. Recorders are reprimanded by their drones (by electrocution) when they betray feelings. There are traitors. Most people don't like Recorders and show it.

Genre: Science Fiction
