Summary: Eva has never been to England, despite the fact that her Grandmother owns an enormous estate. When she and her mum finally visit, Eva finds out that there’s more to the Wolverns than meets the eye.

Notes: This book is reminiscent of Narnia. If you liked the Inkwell Chronicles by J. D. Peabody (which I need to review), you will probably like this series, too. Sarah Arthur weaves together threads from legends and history, our world and another, and the result is satisfying. Remember the school Eustace Clarence Scrub goes to? Remember the doorway to another world? Remember the tales of the white stag? I must admit one thing: I like the second book, Once a Castle, better than the first book. not sure why. The main character, Eva, is very precipitate and headstrong, but loveable.

Age of main character: Forteen-ish

Violence: Train crash, bike crash, evil sorceress. Midnight excursions following the white stag.

Romance: Just a little inkling.

Scary themes: One character sometimes cannot distinguish between reality. SPOILER!!! That character dies of cancer.

Genre: Low Fantasy
