Summary: Mollyanne is part of a large family. A very large one that is prone to mild adventures.
Notes: This book and its sequel are based off of the author’s great-grandmother’s life. It is similar in feel to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books. These books are rather short and the two combined would make a reasonable-sized chapter book. The story moves rather fast, but that is to be expected since the two books contain the history of the main character’s life from five years old to when she is married. If one thinks of it like a scrapbook with stories of important or funny events, it is a delightful collection. There are many children in the family, and their names can get hard to keep track of, but there is a chart with the names and birthdays of each child.
Age of main character: five at the beginning, married at the end.
Violence: Very little. Minor injuries for the most part.
Romance: There are multiple weddings in each book, with the main character’s in the second book.
Scary themes: The character’s father dies because of a mysterious illness that causes swelling in the legs and bursting of liquid from legs. The family moves several times.
Genre: Fictionalized Biography
